Over Four Decades of Institutional Evolution

From a foundational rural credit mandate in 1977 to a comprehensive continental finance and policy alignment network.

1973

Concept Origin in Accra

The idea for Regional Agricultural Credit Associations (RACAs) was conceived during an FAO seminar in Accra, Ghana, focusing on agricultural credit for smallholders.

1977

Official Establishment

Following recommendations of the 1975 World Food Conference in Rome, AFRACA was formally established as a pan-African network to coordinate rural financial services.

1981

Secretariat Registered

The AFRACA Secretariat was formally registered in Nairobi, Kenya, under the NGOs Coordination Act, establishing its permanent operational headquarters.

2003

Diplomatic Status Granted

The Government of Kenya granted AFRACA full diplomatic status and privileges, cementing its standing as a major international intergovernmental organization.

Continental Knowledge Infrastructure

Today, AFRACA connects Central Banks, commercial banks, and microfinance institutions across 30+ countries, serving as a hub for policy alignment and digital finance.
